Lousã
The origins of Lousã's municipality date back to the Roman occupation, from which derives its toponym, since "Lausus" is in fact a Roman name. The references about Lousã reappeared after the fall of the Roman Empire and during the territory's reconquest. In 1160 it obtained the charter by the hand of Dom Afonso Henriques. It prospered during the 18th century; in the 19th century it became the scenery of an episode from the third French invasion. Today, much of the county is occupied by Serra da Lousã, a mountain range characterized by slopes and accented irregularities, by streams, dense vegetation, by the Schist Villages, that hide within it, and other secrets. It has its highest point at Trevim, at 1204 meters altitude, which features a breathtaking view. The main activities of the population, in addition to the industries, are agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and beekeeping. This last is, in fact, one the most important sources of wealth, because the mel da Serra da Lousã (Serra da Lousã honey) is a certified product and DOP (designation of protected origin). The county is filled with points of interest that are not only linked to the direct contact with nature, but also to the built heritage. The walking routes, for mountain biking or cross-country are regular and are thought to be used for all tastes and ages. They all represent the best of the region. The cuisine includes, for example, the famous chanfana (roasted goat meat, served with boiled potatoes), the tibornada no lagar (codfish cooked in a pothole mill with cabbage and potatoes), the sardinhas albardadas (spicy fried sardines) and, for dessert, we recommend the tigelada lousanense (cake made with lemon juice and cinnamon) or a “serranito”, a much sought after and appreciated sweet made of honey and chestnuts.
