Located at an altitude, near the river and the Odivelas dam, the small town of Alvito is one of the oldest and loveliest in the Alentejo region. Neolithic vestiges and many roman artifacts have been found here. It has also been inhabited by the sueves, the visigoths and the moors. Th e architectural heritage is very rich. The castle (dated 1481), the chapel of Saint Luzia and the mother church are national monuments. A special note to the museum of religious art, the library, the hermitage of Saint Luzia, the pillory and the Águas dos Peixes (Fish Waters) Manor. It has a horse riding centre and a shooting area. There is a "pousada" in the castle, as well as rural tourism houses.
