The Aveiro Museum (also known as Santa Joana Museum), former Convento de Jesus founded in 1464 by D. Brites Leitoa, suffered various interventions during the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries: the cloister construction, the reform of the coro-baixo, the construction of the Santa Joana tomb and the principal chapel and church body covering with golden carving and azulejos representing memorable events. With the decree of 1834 (extinction of the Religious Orders), the convent is extinct and becomes a college until 1910. In 1911 it is decided to be a Museum. In 1855-1858 begined the construction of the Teatro Aveirense, planned by Araújo e Silva. The building was ready only in 1878-1881, being opened by the Companhia do Teatro D. Maria II. In the beginning of the XX century, new chairs made of sheep-leather and iron were bought to the pit. In 1912 started the cinematograph sessions. Later, in 1947-1949, the place was rebuilt and reopened, with an Ernesto Korrodi and Engenheiro Von Haff building plan. The Art Nouveau Museum of Aveiro, housed in one of the most emblematic buildings among the heritage of this artistic chain, is the interpretive center of the extensive network of Arte Nova motifs throughout the city of Aveiro. More than restoring the ornamental environment of an Art Nouveau dwelling, this museum nucleus treats the New Art as a didactic argument, intending to take the visitor to reflect on the assumptions of the aesthetic revolution that this movement provided, and better understand its reflexes that still today.
