This is one of 23 shale villages spread across thirteen municipalities in Pinhal Interior. A place that recovers memories of other times, always in total contact with nature. It is in good condition, after having undergone renovation works.

Penela, a name of celtic origins, is located between the interior mountain area and the coastal plains. It was founded during the reign of Dom Afonso Henriques and rceived its charter in 1337. It has a castle whose construction started in the 11th century and a donjon. Ot has two diffrent areas: insid walls, the oldest one, and outside walls.

In this village, located by a stream that flows to the Dueça river, the mother church, rebuilt in the 19th century, with an 18th century door, the pillory (Public Interest Construction), the Boiça House and the old Garridos Manor stand out. The Podentes Cellars belong to the Route of the Beiras Wines. The craftswork includes tapestries.
