Forte de São João Baptista ou do Desembarcadouro
The Fort of São João Baptista, next to the Marina of Machico, was built by order of the Governor, captain general Duarte Sodré Pereira, in the year 1708. His name is also strong in the Wharf because nearby landed the discoverers of the island, Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira. Defended the Bay of Machico, making crossfire with the forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo. Inside there is a neo-Gothic Chapel, dedicated to Saint who gives the name to the fortress. Having served as a hospital and then to summer camp for children of the Santa clara convent in Funchal, is in the process of being transformed into a hotel.
