Montalegre

Montalegre is located on the Barrosão plateau and is bordered to the north by the province of Galicia. The region of Barroso, formed by the municipalities of Montalegre and Boticas, is integrated in the maciço Galaico-Duriense, framed by the mountains of Gerês, Larouco, da Cabreira, das Alturas (or Barroso) and do Leiranco. It is also part of the so-called Terra Fria Transmontana, a region of climatic contrasts with very hot summers and with winters of frequent snowfalls. The fact that it partially belongs to the Peneda-Gerês National Park, the country's only national park, gives it a unique charm. The beauty of this park, with its ponds, waterfalls and lush corners, joins its wealth in terms of flora and fauna. The local cuisine is one of its ex-libris, with special highlight to the Barroso smoked meats and breed meat. Taste the cabrito montanhês (kid dish), trutas do rio Cávado recheadas com presunto (river Cávado trouts stuffed with ham), posta à Barrosã (veal meat of the Barrosã breed), cozido à Barrosã (stew made with Barrosã breed meat), folar de carne (kind of bread baked with different sausages and ham), sopa de pedra (soup made with different types of meats and sausages, red beans and vegetables) and the doce de abóbora (pumpkin jam). The Barrosã crafts mirror its rural character with the traditional capes made of woolen cloth, the leaded iron rings, the woolen socks and cardigans, the lace and embroidery and the reed croças.
