Arcos de Valdevez

Despite its integration into the Cistercian Order, the life of this monastery was turbulent and short. During his visit in 1553, the Abbot of Clairvaux found it in a state of complete neglect and poverty, which is why it was secularized in 1560, becoming a parish church. What we see today in Ermelo is a beautiful Romanesque church adapted to the life of a small parish, first in the 16th century and again in the 18th century. The temple construction started in 1781 but it lasted until the XIX century. The bell tower finishes in pyramid and it arises in the middle of the façade. It is covered in glazed tiles from the XIX century. The entrance is preceded by stairs.

Dated from the 1647 it is an André Soares oeuvre. This is a vast construction with one only nave and main chapel both filled in golden carving. The bell ringer tower was constructed between 1724 and 1727 by Master Domingos Matias and afterwards the main chapel was extended in 1746. It stands out the main altarpiece from the main chapel because it is a fine example from the late Mannerist phase, not only due to its conception, but also due to its decoration.

This is a granite pillory built after the Foral concession to the town in 1515, by D. Manuel I. In 1985 after a period of almost two hundred years in which it was in a place called Valeta, it was transferred to the present location but lost its subjection irons.
