The square has strong connections with the Discoveries, this was the former sand-pit where the Real cais de Belém used to anchor. Now it is a gardened area, sided by quickset hedges and trees (nettle-tree and stone pine), lake and sculptures, with the Afonso de Albuquerque, vice-king of India, statue, manueline style, standing out. This garden presents also four statues created by Barata Feio, placed at the square corners.

This garden is placed in the confluence of three great monuments: the Belém Cultural Centre (CCB), the Jerónimos Monastery and the Planetary. Its beauty is due to the harmony of the dispositions and architectonical plan, being that it was planed accordingly to the Greek and Roman gardens. It has lawns, benches and, at the centre, the luminous fountain, that offers a show of lights and colour.

Also known as the Albertas Garden or Rocha do Conde de Óbidos Garden, it is framed in a set of ancient buildings, such as the Hospitalários Convent of São João de Deus, presently occupied by the GNR, the Conde de Óbidos-Sabugal Palace, presently the headquarters of the Red Cross and the Ancient Art Museum. The garden has a belvedere offering a panoramic view of the river. From this point, the going down to the 24 de Julho Avenue is done through an imposing double staircase, all covered with climbing plants, built in 1880-1882.

It is one of the oldest gardens of the city, idealized by the Marquês de Pombal, in 1771. This garden invokes the trees whose plantation was ordered by the Marquês that have been replaced recently. The name of the garden pays homage to the playwright, poet and writer Marcelino Mesquita.
