The primitive church was destroyed in 1755, and its reconstruction was ordered by Dom José, at the ruins of the Misericórdia Church, from which was save the lateral portal, manueline, two windows, also manueline, a low embossed work of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia and the Santíssimo Sacramento chapel, from the XVII century.

Inside the small chapel are the glazed tiles, the mural paintings, the woodcarving, the sculptures, and the chair of São Gens, which belonged to the first bishop of Lisbon. The legend says that the stone large chair is do-gooding for pregnant women, making the childbirth easy.
