Erected in the square with the same name, this statue, along with the city gates, forming the main entrance in the city of Ponta Delgada. Gonçalo Velho Cabral discovered the Formigas in 1431, following a first sighted Islands location trip by Diogo de Silves, in 1427. In 1432 landed on the islands of Santa Maria and São Miguel.
