A Romanesque temple from the late 12th century, it belonged to the former Monastery of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine. Construction began in 1136, with expansions taking place in the 16th and 18th centuries. The Baroque elements date from the latter.

Built during the reign of King Afonso III, it sits atop a rocky hillock next to the town. The castle, shaped like a quadrangular star, has a keep approximately 15 meters high.
