Ponte da Barca

The village of Ponte da Barca lies in the heart of Alto Minho, flanked by the Lima River. Agriculture remains the main activity for the population in the more rural areas, as does the production of handicrafts. Typical are embroidery, weaving, basketry, the traditional Valentine's Handkerchiefs, openwork hems, stonework, wooden miniatures, and other arts. As the Minho region is a place of fine cuisine, the following are renowned: Portuguese stew, "sarrabulho", and the unmistakable "Papas de Sarrabulho", Serra Amarela goat, and Barrosã steak; lamprey, shad, and trout, when in season, attract countless connoisseurs. Among the desserts, sponge cake and egg bases are notable, as is the case with the "bolo branco", as well as orange cheesecakes and "Magalhães".
