A work of Cassiano Branco, opened in 1936. It uses, in a remarkable way, the volumetric values of the modernist code. It is, together with the Éden-theatre, considered to be one of the great works of the Portuguese architecture.
With the ceilings painted by great XIX century portuguese artists, the building is sited over a armoury from the XVI century. Inside there is a large yard, where you may observe glazed tiles panels telling the history of Portugal.
Date of 1940 and emphasise the decorative elements that uses, in particular the diversity of materials, their colors, blind and gable decoration inside the panels of Almada Negreiros. It is an important work in the panorama of Portuguese architecture, by formal originality of construction as a compromise solution between the monumentalist language of the time and the demand for innovative solutions and Modernists.
These are two contiguous buildings: at the ground floor are the Coliseu dois Recreios atrium, the entrance hall and the bar-restaurant of the Geography Society; the second floor lodges the Society’s library and the third floor the “Sala Portugal”. On top there’s a glass cupola. This is the largest playhouse in Lisbon, with 7000 seats.
