Aldeia da Luz, as it is known today, is the result of the advancement of time. With the construction of the Alqueva dam, old Luz, of Paleolithic and Neolithic origins, was submerged, as was Lousa Castle, of Roman origin, and some Roman road crossings the Guadiana. Against the wishes of the population, a village was built from scratch, about two kilometers from the old one, inaugurated in 2002. The county seat, the town of Crato, was built on the ruins of an important city, perhaps Carthaginian, and had a charter in 1232. There are several archaeological monuments in this area. The keep and walls remain of the old castle (Property of Public Interest). Traditional activities include woodworking, stonework and cork work. The region's cuisine is rich and varied.

A typically Alentejo village, it has one of the largest Rossios squares of the Portalegre district, with an amphitheater located in the garden. At a cultural level, the highlights are the 16th century pillory, the 16th century church of Espírito Santo, with later modifications, the church of Nossa Senhora das Candeiras, the Church of Misericórdia and the cruise.
