Rio Maior

These are the only natural salt pans in Portugal. Located 30 kilometers from the sea, they have 400 tanks, from which salt is extracted from a depth of about 10 meters. Between May and September, the salt is collected, after the water (which contains about 200 to 300 grams of salt) is collected and evaporated after a week.

Casa Senhorial d'El-Rei Dom Miguel

Rio Maior

The name of this manor house derives from the fact that Dom Miguel spent the night here before the Battle of Almoster. This manor house is notable for its ceilings painted with royal coats of arms, the chapel-oratory with a Baroque façade, and the porch leading to the house. The lower floor was occupied by services, while the upper floor housed the residence.

The architecture is religious in nature, consisting of a vaulted chancel and a nave, the latter with two side altars. The sacristy preserves a Baroque lavatory. Another highlight is the baptismal font, brought from the main church, which is housed in a chapel under the tribune, next to the Chapel of Senhor dos Passos.

This is one of three megalithic monuments in Portugal. Belonging to the Alcobertas Parish Church, this funerary dolmen consists of a chamber and a corridor formed by large pillars. Notable features include the tile covering and stone altar.

This medieval oven, discovered in the 1950s, served as a communal oven, specifically for baking pottery, tiles, and other utensils. It measures approximately 1.5 meters on each side and has a grate on which the pieces to be fired were placed. The roof, made of tiles and stones, was dismantled once the firing was complete to remove the pieces.
