Elvas

Elvas, part of the municipality of Portalegre, is twelve kilometers from Spain, separated by the Caia River and the Guadiana River. Agriculture has always been the primary source of livelihood for the local population, and thanks to the construction of the Caia Dam, it was possible to adopt an irrigated culture, which diversified local products. Due to its proximity to Spain, commerce relies heavily on the Spanish, who take advantage of the weekends to explore the city and fill the region's hotels. Good cuisine is ubiquitous, featuring delicacies such as "migas" with spare ribs, lamb stew, Alentejo-style pork, scalded river fish, and coriander trotters. Among the desserts, special mention goes to "sericaia", "azevias", "nogados", "enxovalhada", and "filhós".
