Figueira da Foz
Figueira da Foz, located on the Atlantic coast, along the mouth of the Mondego river, is known as the "Queen of Costa da Prata", thanks to its beautiful and extensive beaches. This is one of the main seaside resorts of the central region, with a big Casino, good hotel and restaurant equipment, a bullring and conditions for the practice of several sports. The intense nightlife, especially in the summer months, makes it into a very attractive town for tourists. The salt pans of Figueira da Foz, located on the estuary of the Mondego, river are worthy of a visit. They were for many years the main economic activity of the municipality and represent nowadays an important cultural landmark. You can visit the museum and take a boat ride, which will allow you to get to know this ancient practice a little better. This area is very rich in terms of natural heritage, with special emphasis to the Lagoas de Quiaios and Lagoa da Vela (lagoons), the Mata Nacional da Foja (natural forest) and the Montes de Santa Olaia e Ferrestêlo (hills). In terms of architectural heritage, pay a visit to the fortress of Buarcos, the Paço de Maiorca, the monastery of Santa Maria da Seiça and the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Buarcos. The culinary delights for you to taste are essentially based on fish and seafood: arroz de sardinhas (sardines rice), feijoada de búzios (bean stew with whelk), espetadas de mexilhão (mussel kebabs), caldeirada à pescador (fish stew made also with seafood and potatoes) and raia de pitau (skate stew). Enjoy getting to know the "marginal" (panoramic street) restaurants with terraces offering beautiful panoramic views over the ocean.
