Vila de Rei

Vila de Rei municipality is a small village in the District of Castelo Branco and is composed of only three parishes. The various traces found by the village show that Celts and, later, the Romans were the first to populate the region. The date of creation of Vila de Rei as County dates back to the year 1285. The past also has episodes of French invasions that devastated significant parts of the County. At the time of construction of the Castelo de Bode dam, part of the County was submerged, precisely where the land was more fertile: Along with the fires that sometimes ravage the region, the development of Vila de Rei is delayed, although this reality is being progressively changed, thanks to the implementation of various public works, access to water supply networks, etc. This Council is closely linked to Portugal geodetic Center, which is located here. The point is marked by a geodetic framework, on the ridge of the serra da Melriça, called the Picoto Melriça. Is a site that deserves a visit, not only for the symbolism of the location, as the surrounding landscape. The County is rich in natural landscapes, being the Penedo Furado one of its exponents. The gastronomy, the similarity of adjacent regions, contemplates the fish soup, stuffed stomach, lamb maranhos, and sausages. The best known confectionery is the rice pudding, scones and tigeladas honey. All of these factors and those that the visitor will discover give meaning to the slogan of the Council-Vila de Rei: a jewel in the heart of Portugal.
