Almodôvar

The municipality of Almodôvar is located in the Baixo Alentejo, Beja district, between the Serra do Caldeirão and the Alentejo lowland. The Igreja Matriz de Almodôvar (mother church), the convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the Ermida de Santo António, the Manueline Window-Praça da República, the Biblioteca-Museu Municipal Severo Portela (Severo Portela Municipal Library-Museum) and thePalheiros de Veio are some of the famous monuments within the municipality. The main wealth of Almodôvar are the cork, medronho (arbutus brandy), goat cheese and honey. The wool and patchwork blankets, the rope, leather and cork works, the handmade shoes and the basketry are some examples of the typical craftsmanship. In September/October the "autumn in Almodôvar"- Music Week (dedicated to classical and traditional music) and the "Heritage Days" (disclosure of the built heritage through guided visits to the monuments) take place.

Museu Severo Portela

Almodôvar

A museum and a small library located in a centennary building, recovered in 1982 and 1983. It exhibits paintings, drawings, sculptures, books, diploms and medals by Severo Portela.

Museu da Escrita do Sudoeste

Almodôvar

Located in the centre of Almodôvar, in the building of the old Municipal Cinema-Theatre. It opened to the public in September 29, 2007, with artefacts found in the archaeological core of Almodôvar. It is devoted to the first form of writing in the Iberian Peninsula, dating back to the Iron Age, that hasn't been deciphered yet.

Povoado/Estação Arqueológica de Mesas de Castelinho

These are ruins from a small fortified village standing on a hill peek. The materials collected in this archaeological place seem to indicate the former existence of a military position and not exactly a fortified habitat.
