Alvito and Vila Nova da Baronia are the two parishes that make up Alvito's municipality, one of the smallest of the Baixo Alentejo. In ancient times, as well as traces of the Neolithic period, the county was also occupied by Romans, from which a few traces can still be seen today. The castle of Alvito, a National Monument, did not assume a role of military relevance, but it allowed the development of the town and welcomed several royal guests. Being distinctly rural, its landscape is also characterized by the passage of the ribeira de Odivelas. Agriculture is the main activity of the region. The Manueline art features a significant part of its monuments, the majority of them being classified as Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest) or Monumento Nacional (National Monument). Culturally it is also enriched by the typical Alentejo song, which, thanks to several choral groups, can still easily by heard. Handicrafts and gastronomy reinforce Alvito's identity. Embroidery and leather works are still made by local people. The sausages, manufactured in the county, the homemade bread, the garlic bread and the migas (dish made with leftover bread) with pork or lamb are part of the local restaurants menus.
