Alter do Chão

Located in Alto Alentejo, the quiet Alentejo village of Alter do Chão is part of the Portalegre district. Its origin is closely linked to a Roman settlement called "Abeltererium" or "Eleteri”. In the municipality, testimonies of this occupation are visible, with the Vila Formosa bridge standing out. From the white houses with colorful stripes, you can hear ancient stories of a past that helps to understand the uses and customs of the present. The gastronomy, typical of the region, offers delicacies such as: "sarapatel", lamb stew with saffron and, in traditional sweets, "fatias da China" (Chinese slices). In handicrafts, the highlights include work made in leather, tinwork, cork, wood and blades.
