Angra do Heroísmo

It is one of the few cities that can be proud of having its center classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. Angra do Heroísmo is a town located on the south coast of Terceira island in the Azores, with about 10200 inhabitants and the seat of a municipality with approximately 35 000 inhabitants. The inland is characterized by the green pastures, in contrast to the coastline, blackened by lava torrents, forming small coves and peninsulas, the most famous of which is Monte Brasil, one of the most visited places of Angra do Heroísmo. The occupation of the island dates back to the mid-15th century and it is known that it was administered by the flemish Jácome de Bruges in 1460. The privileged geographical situation of the island made it a military port for supplying themselves throughout centuries. The festivities in honor of the Holy Spirit, which extend for several weeks after Easter, are famous in all parts of the island.
