Barrancos
Barrancos is located in the Lower Alentejo region, on the left bank of the Guadiana River, on the border with Spain. It is also known for its bullfighting and for being the hottest and driest municipality in the country. The landscape is characterized by holm oak savannah and schist soil, and the main source of income is agriculture. Its origins can be found in Noudar, a few kilometers from the center. Seven-meter-high walls surrounded the ancient village, and within it, a church and several ruined houses still remain. The village of Barrancos is visited mainly during the famous summer festivals, where the famous and controversial bullfight takes place. The cuisine is characterized by dishes based on the famous black pig.
