Câmara de Lobos

The municipality of Câmara de Lobos was created on May 25th 1835, having its settlement occurred on October 4th of the same year and having been elevated to the category of town on August 3rd 1996. The name was given by the explorers João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, due to the shape of its bay (Câmara) and given to the existence of many sea-wolves in the area. It consists of the Câmara de Lobos, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, Curral das Freiras, Quinta Grande and Jardim da Serra parishes and is located on the southern slope of the autonomous region of Madeira. It is limited to the east by the municipality of Funchal, on the west by the municipality of Ribeira Brava, on the north by the municipalities of Santana and São Vicente and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean. With just over 52 km2, Câmara de Lobos has a population density of almost 600 inhabitants per km2, characterized by a very young age population, especially when compared with the national and European values. Because it is located in Funchal's metropolitan area, it is the starting point for Madeira's nightlife, being it a safe place and a sought-after tourist destination. Having survived essentially from fishing and agriculture along the times and having assumed the production of wine, banana and other fruit species of particular importance for the regional economy, it is in this county that the universally famous Madeira wine is produced. The Poncha, a mixture of lemon juice, honey and spirits distilled from sugar cane, is also a welcome card of Câmara de Lobos, as well as the Cabo Girão, Europe's highest and the World's second highest cape located directly over the sea Today, the county is recognized for its services and, mainly, of tourism on Madeira Island, contributing in this way to the development of the regional economy.
