The Ducal Palace was begun in 1501 by the 4th Duke of Braganza, Jaime, and until 1640 was residence of the noble family of the Kingdom's largest. With the Ascension to the throne of the 8th Duke, d. João, the building is only used sporadically until the 19th century. D. Carlos comes to Vila Viçosa frequently and, after the Republic, the last member of the family the King d.
