Museu Biblioteca da Casa de Bragança
The Ducal Palace was begun in 1501 by the 4th Duke of Braganza, Jaime, and until 1640 was residence of the noble family of the Kingdom's largest. With the Ascension to the throne of the 8th Duke, d. João, the building is only used sporadically until the 19th century. D. Carlos comes to Vila Viçosa frequently and, after the Republic, the last member of the family the King d. Manuel II, decides in her will do there install the Museu da Casa de Bragança.
In the Palace are also installed the armoury, the collection of blue and White Porcelain from China, the Treasury and the collection of Carriages (national coach Museum). The castle is a fortification unique in its kind, in brick, built c 1530. Currently houses the collections of archaeology and of Hunting.
