At the far end of the Sítio Promontory, overlooking the North beach, King Sebastian ordered the construction of the São Miguel Fortress in 1577 to defend the cove from pirates. It was later rebuilt by order of Philip II in 1600. Its current layout was commissioned by King John IV during the restoration of the monarchy. Triangular in shape, it has a bastion at each corner, a sloping wall at the bottom, and, internally, features a parade ground on the second floor and casemates opening through several semicircular arches. The funicular railway connects the lower part of Nazaré to Sítio, covering a total of 318 meters. It was inaugurated in 1889, as the difficulty of access to Sítio always hampered the development of the area and the settlement of its inhabitants. In 1963, after a major accident, it was out of service for several years, returning to service in 1968. In the 21st century, the carriages were renovated for greater comfort and safety for the more than one million users who use this means of transport annually.

Housed in an early 20th-century building, the former residence of the writer who gives it its name, this museum is essentially regional in character, featuring very heterogeneous collections and temporary exhibitions. The collection encompasses ethnography, archaeology, painting, sculpture, and photography. Within this space are objects from the Paleolithic period to the present century, which primarily depict the maritime life of Nazaré, the history of the town, and the Marian devotion to Our Lady of Nazaré.
