Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo
At the far end of the Sítio Promontory, overlooking the North beach, King Sebastian ordered the construction of the São Miguel Fortress in 1577 to defend the cove from pirates. It was later rebuilt by order of Philip II in 1600. Its current layout was commissioned by King John IV during the restoration of the monarchy. Triangular in shape, it has a bastion at each corner, a sloping wall at the bottom, and, internally, features a parade ground on the second floor and casemates opening through several semicircular arches. Since 1903, a lighthouse with a luminous range of 15 miles has been installed there to aid navigation.
