Considered to be one of the city’s ex-libris, the Serra do Pilar (and its typical church) is located at the city entrance, one of the highest places of Vila Nova de Gaia. The Convent, that no longer functions, belonged to the observing prebendary of Santo Agostinho, that occupied the place during the 16th century. In front of the church there’s a belvedere with one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Oporto.

All that remains of the castle is the keep, the remains of a circular cube and some sections of the wall. This castle provided the first line of defense in the northeast of Trás-os-Montes, together with the castles of Algoso, Miranda do Douro, Outeiro, Vimioso and Mogadouro, with which it formed a strong defensive group.
