Montemor-o-Novo is with an area of 1450 square kilometers one of the largest municipalities in Portugal. Santiago do Escoural ruins indicate a presence in these lands as early as the Neolithic period. The Romans later founded the town of Castrum Malianum and the Moors later expanded the boundaries of the village. The charter was granted by King Dom Sancho I in the year of 1203 and renovated by Dom Manuel I in 1503. The elevation of Montemor-o-Novo to the city status in 1988 was another milestone. In economic terms, the production of meat is one of the most important activities, being it the county that produces more meat in the country. Handicraft and gastronomy are part of the patrimonial and cultural richness of Montemor. The cork pieces, embroideries, basketry, Arraiolos carpets, ceramics and tiling are some of the works that are still created in the region. With regards to gastronomy, the sweet sericaia (typical cake made with cinnamon and lemon), batatas de rebolão (potatoes cooked in a clay recipient), queijadas (sweet cheese pastries) and conventual sweets are a bit everywhere and it is suggested that you accompany them by the traditional pennyroyal and granite liqueurs. The game dishes, veal, lamb, pies and sausages have unique flavors, that make anyone's mouth water.
