At the João Mendonça Street, by the Central canal, you find three buildings with interpreting Arte Nova façades. Through this canal where, in ancient times, all the commerce of the city used to concentrate, now flow the coloured moliceiros boats that dazzle the tourists. At the angle formed by the Central and Pirâmides canals, is the Rossio: ample, garden-like, with palm-trees lined up and arte Nova details. File created in 1965 but only opened to the public in 1971. It currently has a documentary collection with more than 150,000 titles. Its building has a reading room, a room for viewing microfilms, a room of indexes, a multipurpose room with support of bar and Café, an area of treatment of documentation and ten deposits.
Opened in 1993, the Municipal Library is a pleasant place, which invites you to a closer look at books. It has a journal and magazines’ reading spot, a videoteca (where videos are kept for people to refer to when needed), a ludoteca (where toys are lent for children to play) and an auditorium.
