Madalena

The municipality of Madalena is the youngest of the three counties in Pico island. It was in the year of 1723 that this third municipality and the new village of Madalena were created. However, the story goes that the first settlers arrived in the late 15th century in São Mateus, today, a parish in the Madalena's municipality. The growth and dynamism that Madalena denotes vis-à-vis comparing to other municipalities of Pico Island is the result, above all, of the communication axes: it houses the island's only airport and the shipping with the neighboring island of Faial is performed daily. However, tourism is still quite small and seasonal. The most relevant economic activities, in this county with about 6000 inhabitants, are still livestock and agriculture or industries related to these activities: canning industry, viticulture, dairy industry, among others. There are two striking elements in Madalena's landscape: Pico Mountain and the vine culture. The majestic 2351 meters of Pico's altitude are breathtaking. Sometimes it even becomes impossible to look away from it. The vine culture, considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004, is another element that mark a good part of the 149 km2 Madalena's municipality extension. Here it is the design and geometric cutout of the dark and hard basaltic lands that jump in sight. The end result is a unique wine, enjoyed both inside and outside the country.
