Lajes do Pico

Lajes do Pico is one of the three municipalities that make up Pico Island. It was south of the current town that, before 1460, Fernando Álvares Evangelho and, later, the rest of the island's initial explorers disembarked. In economic terms, the locals began by developing wheat and pastry cultivation and, later, vineyards. From the 18th century onwards, eruptions, earthquakes, cyclones and other natural phenomena destroyed crops and forced locals to look for other activities. It was at sea that the locals sought these means of subsistence, through whaling. Extinct in the 80s of the 20th century, the places where whale oil and meal were processed, such as the SIBIL factory, gave way to museums and spaces for the interpretation of this way of living.
