The municipality of Mortágua integrates the extreme south-west of Viseu's district, being composed of ten parishes. The confluence with the mountains of Caramulo and Buçaco, the Aguieira dam, the waterfalls and the schist villages are the main traits of this municipality, where it is still possible to find archaeological remains that attest to the prehistoric occupation of the territory. Here have passed Napoleon's troops in the early 19th century. Agriculture, some industries, forestry and tourism activity are the main facilitators of Mortágua dynamic poles. In its name is one of the attractions of this municipality, the water ("água"), since this abounds in the municipality and allows not only the practice of nautical sports, but also the contact with a natural heritage of great beauty. Who goes through these lands must try the lampantana (sheep meat cooked in a traditional clay recipient and served with potatoes and turnip greens). What is also a symbol of the local gastronomy is the bolo de cornos (lemon and cinnamon cake), the typical Easter cake. Any delicacy should be naturally enjoyed in the company of the renowned Dão wines. To remember a passage through Mortágua, we suggest you take with you one or more red clay works, which paintings make these pieces of pottery into beautifully crafted legacies.
