Nelas
Located between the mountains of Estrela and Caramulo, in the heart of the Dão, the municipality of Nelas is crossed by the rivers Mondego and Dão. Rich in natural resources and with a diverse heritage, it has a great tourist potential. If you're visiting it, make sure to know the manors and noble houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, specially Casa das Fidalgas, Paço dos Cunhas and Casa de Santar. There are also interesting monuments of religious nature scattered throughout the territory. Under the health tourism, you can take advantage of the modern thermal treatments in the spa resort of Caldas da Felgueira. The production of wine is one of the strengths of the local economy. It produces some of the best Dão wines and it even possesses the headquarters of the Centro de Estudos Vitivinícolas do Dão (Dão Wine Study Center). In addition to wine, also the local queijo da serra (serra cheese) and olive oil are reference products. When it comes to festive events it is important to mention the Festas do Município de Nelas (local celebrations), which take place in the third week of June. They provide great musical shows and cultural and sportive events. The craft still lingers in this region. Visit the local crafts shops and take with you the famous rag dolls or traditional wooden objects.
