Oliveira de Frades

Oliveira de Frades is one of the municipalities that integrates, together with Vouzela and São Pedro do Sul, the Lafões subregion and has an area of 142 square kilometers, encompassing 12 parishes. Geographically delimited by the mountains of Caramulo, Talhadas, Ladário and Gralheiro, and by the Vouga and Alfusqueiro rivers, it enjoys of the Atlantic's temperate climate, a characteristic of Vale do Vouga. The landscapes of the county alternate between the various shades of green of the hills and the valleys and natural viewpoints dug by the waters of rivers and streams, between rustic granite villages, where time does not pass, and the modernity of urban agglomerations. The environmental wealth of the region is undeniable, with the botanical reserve of Carvalhedo da Gândara or the unspoiled river beaches, and has good conditions for the practice of outdoor activities such as mountain and water sports, mountain biking, rappelling, climbing, hiking, fishing or canoeing. With a long history of connection to agriculture, livestock and forestry, visible in the landscape itself and in constructions like granaries and mills, the county embarked on the path of industrialization and modernization over the past decades, taking advantage of its good geographical location and attracting varied branches of manufacturing industry. Tourism and services complement the more relevant activities in this region. Thanks to the persistence of craftsmen, it is still possible to admire works of tinsmith, stonework, sieves, strainers and other artifacts of manual labor that have fallen into disuse. The gastronomy, that keeps alive the tradition of the region, in dishes such as the "Vitela à Lafões" (Lafões-style roast veal) arroz de cabidela (kind of stew with different types of meat and sausages and blood), rojões (pork meat snack) or enchidos (sausages). For dessert, try the queijadinhas de Oliveira de Frades (Oliveira de Frades-style cheese pastries), the local specialty.
