Penamacor

Penamacor integrates the region of Beira Baixa, forming part of the District of Castelo Branco and being composed of 12 parishes. The Serra da Malcata dominates the bulk of the landscape and the main economic activities. Its origins are very old, but just from the reign of Sancho I the past of Penamacor becomes clearer. Testimony of that past are various monuments, some of them classified, that deserve a visit. Currently, the activities that ensure the subsistence of the mainstream are agriculture, livestock, dairy, exploitation of cork, the marbles and granites. The bet in local tourism has given its fruits. A visit to Penamacor is always worth, not only by the green landscape, picturesque houses and the streets, but also by its people, traditions and gastronomy. Sausages, cheese, and lamb dishes are the more common; in pastry, the "pão-de-ló" and the "arroz doce" are the most traditional. The many festivals and fairs of different parishes tend to give more movement to the entire County and attract neighboring populations.
