Cava de Viriato

This garden, located near Feira de S. Mateus square, has an octagonal shape and is surrounded by walls and a protective moat. It used to be a military camp built by the Romans. It has been, since the 16th century, unduly associated with the Lusitanian warrior Viriato. In the 20th century, a monument was even erected in the garden in his honor.
