Ansião is a small village in the district of Leiria with about 2500 inhabitants and it is the seat of a municipality that, with around 14,000 people distributed over 8 parishes, currently faces a serious desertification problem. Therefore the local council is investing in tourism to boost the county and to create jobs. And there is no tourist potential missing in this place, specially Ansião's variety in historical heritage and cultural and architectural wealth of local origin are worth knowing. Very marked by the past and by the people who crossed it, it was the Roman occupation that most influenced the evolution of this territory along the times. In addition to the numerous monuments and centuries-old churches, pay also a visit to the typical villages up to one of the viewpoints and extend the sight over the surrounding valleys and mountains. It is an amazing patchwork quilt painted in shades of greens, browns, yellows and grays. If you enjoy hunting, the isolated forest areas of Ansião offer excellent conditions for its practice. But the identity of a territory is primarily defined by its people, cultural traditions, usages and customs. The county folklore groups are one of the testimonies of that identity, as well as some of the local crafts-weaving, basketry, stonework in limestone, tinsmith – and the gastronomy, which is as traditional as it can be: sardinha albardada (dish made with fried sardines), favas guisadas (stew of fava beans), papas com farinha de milho (kind of mash with meats and sausages), chicharros com couve miúda e batata à rodela (favetta dish with cabbage and potatoes), cabrito and borrego de Sicó (kid and lamb dishes) are the most typical delicacies of Ansião. But the ex-libris of this gastronomic region is the Rabaçal cheese with its unique taste. Don't miss to taste it locally while surrounded by the scents of Terras de Sicó.
