Baião

Baião is a county that marks the transition of the region between Douro and Minho to the transmontana one and it consists of 20 parishes. Its landscape is torn by the Douro river and marked by extensive vineyard hectares. There are several traces across the county that date back to prehistorical times. The municipality's name is related to its history, given to the fact that the Bayões, a noble family descend from a German nobleman and warrior, D. Arnoldo, who was stripped of his duchy because of wars. References to Baião appeared in the 12th century and the charter dates back to 1513. Currently, Baião is linked to illustrious names of various arts and for having been a waypoint for Eça de Queiroz, who wrote "As Cidades e as Serras" in this place. The numerous churches and chapels scattered around the county and the manor (which once belonged to noble families) are two more characteristic aspects of this region. Handicrafts and gastronomy are very well represented here. The Gestaçô walking sticks, the Frende heather baskets, the tinsmith objects, the blankets and straw hats are some of the handcrafted icons. Much sought after and renowned is the lamb roasted in the oven, that often is accompanied by the regional vinho verde, not forgetting the bazulaque (stew made with lamb's kids, meat, onion, bacon, olive oil, bread and spices). The doce da Teixeira (kind of cinnamon cake) and the sopa doce (kind of sweet mousse) are two specialties! The many festivals which take place at various times of the year, with emphasis on that of S. Bartolomeu, tend to attract numerous visitors.
