Castanheira de Pêra
Inserted in Zêzere's river basin, the municipality of Castanheira de Pera is composed by only two parishes and occupies an area of the serra da Lousã with 600 meters height. The beauty of the natural landscape and natural resources assume an important factor in the municipality. Snow pits are a milestone in its history and are specimens of the ancient real neveiro. From here went out ice to supply the Court and some cafes in Lisbon. In 1787 Júlio Pereira de Castro, the King Neveiro-Mor (ice seller), ordered the building of chapel of Santo António da Neve. The Valley of Ribeira de Pera witnesses the presence of wool industry that, in the second half of the 19th century, was at its peak. Currently it is, followed by livestock, the most important industry of the municipality. The fact that it was attached to Pedrogão Grande until late, explains why Castanheira de Pera is not very rich on an architectural level. Chestnut and honey, which are typical products of the region, are reasons for the organization of annual events that attract connoisseurs of these delicacies.
