Start discovering the history of Castelo Branco at Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior Museum, installed in the old Episcopal Palace. Castelo Branco is the capital of the Beira Baixa district and its most valuable heritage failed to survive the citys' invasions, reason why the Jardim do Paço Episcopal garden became the ex-libris. This garden highlights the Baroque style in Portugal and was built in 1725 by the Bishop of Guarda, Dom João de Mendonça. It has waterfalls, lakes and a famous staircase with statues of the Portuguese kings. The gardens of the Bishop's Palace are very flowered and well preserved. From the Miradouro de São Gens, next to the castle, you can enjoy the views of the city's historic area. The medieval streets deserve attentive visits and, when walking through the old part of the city, you go along the Largo da Sé Catedral until the Praça Velha, dedicated to Luís de Camões. In the historic center, rua de Santa Maria invites to a stroll and to observe the 16th century facades, which you will meet along the way. The albicastrense gastronomy highlights the local cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the sausages (chouriço de tripa estreita), the fígado de cebolada (liver dish with onions) and the famous Castelo Branco cow meat pies. Linen embroidered bedspreads with natural silk yarn is one of the most famous and internationally renown traditional handicraft products. Pay a visit to the Archaeological Station of São Martinho, the convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça de Castelo Branco, the Cathedral and to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Mércoles. The sacred art museum is also open to visitors and invites you to discover a heritage of great wealth.
