Castro Daire

The small village of Castro Daire is located on the top of a hill, framed between the buttresses of serras de Montemuro, Gralheira and Caramulo. The main source of local income is the pastoralism, developed mainly along water courses, and agriculture, with emphasis on the green wine, corn, beans and potatoes production. The human occupation of this territory dates back to the prehistoric period, from which testimonials in the form of tapirs and dolmens exist. Its toponym, in fact, has its origins in an ancient fort built in one of the highest points. The Romans came later, leaving several vestiges like the Ponte Pedrinha bridge (rebuilt in the 19th century) and some walls are also believed to be of Roman origin. The village also has a strong aristocratic past, visible, for example, in the Fidalgos da Cerca house, a building dating from the 18th century (referenced by Camilo Castelo Branco in "Amor de Perdição"), and the Aguilares blazoned house. On an ethnographic level, be sure to check the regional craftsmanship, specially the Lamelas basketry and the Baltar and Vila Pouca clog-making. In gastronomy, we highlight the roasted lamb, truta do Paiva (trout dish), pão-de-ló (kind of sponge cake) and bolo-podre (kind of sweet bread with lemon).
