Castro Verde

Castro Verde is located in the heart of the lower Alentejo, in a territory known as Campo Branco, between the Alentejo plains that border the Caldeirão mountain range. A significant portion of the territory is part of the Natura 2000 Network, represented by a Special Protection Area for endangered bird species such as the Great Bustard and Lesser Kestrel. The region is intrinsically linked to the formation of Portugal and its founder. The legendary Battle of Ourique, in which Afonso I "defeated five Moorish kings," is set against the backdrop of the site of S. Pedro das Cabeças. For about 3,000 years, the region has been characterized by communities whose main activities were mining and pastoralism. Today, pastoralism remains the municipality's primary activity.
