Anyone unfamiliar with the Aire and Candeeiros mountain ranges might think that their elevations of 577 and 613 meters respectively would be nothing extraordinary in terms of landscape. However, this massif, stretching between Ourém in the north and Rio Maior in the south, is a veritable kingdom of (limestone) stone. Besides the two mountain ranges that give it its name, it includes the Serra de Mendiga, the Santo António Plateau, and part of the São Mamede Plateau. Also, noteworthy is the Dinosaur Footprints Natural Monument.

The Rio Maior Salt Pans Ecomuseum is located about 3 km from the city center and nestled in a valley at the foot of the Serra dos Candeeiros, in the heart of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park. Architectural highlights include the Nossa Senhora do Rosário parish church, the pillory, the former Town Hall, now the Azambujeira Regional Museum, and the single-arch stone fountain bridge built during the reign of Queen Maria. Located in a valley adjacent to the Serra dos Candeeiros, it is bathed by a stream that originates in the picturesque site of Olhos de Água. Here, you'll find beautiful natural caves and rooms with stalactites, calcite crystals, and remains of bones. Among the architectural heritage, a megalithic dolmen (Property of Public Interest) attached to the church stands out, containing a fifteenth-century sculpture, and traces of Roman times, evident in the ruins of a communal oven.

These are the only natural salt pans in Portugal. Located 30 kilometers from the sea, they have 400 tanks, from which salt is extracted from a depth of about 10 meters. Between May and September, the salt is collected, after the water (which contains about 200 to 300 grams of salt) is collected and evaporated after a week.

The name of this manor house derives from the fact that Dom Miguel spent the night here before the Battle of Almoster. This manor house is notable for its ceilings painted with royal coats of arms, the chapel-oratory with a Baroque façade, and the porch leading to the house. The lower floor was occupied by services, while the upper floor housed the residence.

The architecture is religious in nature, consisting of a vaulted chancel and a nave, the latter with two side altars. The sacristy preserves a Baroque lavatory. Another highlight is the baptismal font, brought from the main church, which is housed in a chapel under the tribune, next to the Chapel of Senhor dos Passos.
