Rio Maior
The municipality of Rio Maior, bordered to the north by the Serra d'Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, lies between the Ribatejo and the Coastal regions and is traversed by several waterways, the most notable of which is the one that gave it its name: the Rio Maior. Natural resources abound and are scattered throughout the municipality, including caves, sinkholes, and especially the Fonte da Bica Salt Pans, which have contributed to the region's economic development for centuries. The Tasquinhas Fair and the National Onion Fair mark the municipality's cultural and festive calendar. They reflect the region's conviviality, gastronomy, and fine wine; the latter is also the oldest fair in Rio Grande do Sul, held since the 18th century.
