After more than a century of activity, the Raul da Bernarda company decided to open the museum's doors to the public in 2000, on its own initiative, making it possible, since then, to learn about the history of the oldest earthenware factory in Alcobaça. In addition to the "Raul da Bernarda Ceramics Collection," there is also the exhibition "The Costumes of the Rancho do Alcoa, alluding to Alcobaça pottery," which portrays the historical, ethnographic, and artistic memory of the city.

Built by Cistercian monks between 1178 and 1254, the Monastery consists of three sections: the Church and the North and South Wings, which respectively housed the apartments of the kings and visiting court, and the residences of the Abbot and the monks. The original façade retains the battlements on the side roof, the Gothic portal, and the large side windows. Located on a rise of about 70 meters, west of the monastery, Alcobaça Castle was commissioned by King Afonso Henriques in 1147, on the presumed ruins of a 6th-century fortification. Destroyed several times during the Reconquista, King Sancho ordered its reconstruction to shelter the Alcobaça monks and the population in case of attack. After suffering several seismic shocks, it ended up serving as a prison during the reign of the Philips.
