In this square, one of the prettiest in Coimbra, there are the São Tiago and São Bartolomeu Churches, the Pelourinho (pillory) and 17thand 18th centuries buildings. The names of the streets that start from the square descend from the works people had, selling the final product at the square.

It was the seat of Alcaidaria-Mor of the village, of the counts of Santa Cruz served as a hostel for several monarchs and him gathered cuts and if decided to historical events such as the construction of the University of Coimbra and Vasco da Gama's departure to India.
