Still worthy of attention is the Keep, reinforced with marble masonry on the corners, square and squat, completely solid.

A short distance from the village of Penas Roias are the remains of this castle with a quadrangular structure. All that remains of the castle is the keep, the remains of a circular cube and some sections of the wall. This castle provided the first line of defense in the northeast of Trás-os-Montes, together with the castles of Algoso, Miranda do Douro, Outeiro, Vimioso and Mogadouro, with which it formed a strong defensive group.

It is a large fortified town dating from the iron age\/Roman times with occupation in the middle ages. The houses feature a round plant, some with separate foyer and lajeadas streets. There are five lines of ramparts, reinforced by the rising side by turrets arranged in accordance with the terrain or accidents where the need for defence to that required. It is also known as Monte do Castelo de Neiva.
