Silves
Silves is the second-largest municipality in the Algarve, straddling the coast and the Algarve Barrocal. Bathed by the Arade River, it is known as the red city, largely due to the sandstone walls and the abundance of orange groves. Its economy was heavily influenced by the cork industry. But it is during the Medieval Fair in August that Silves is filled with color and excitement. The event seeks to recreate the era of the Christian Reconquest, where period figures parade in matching costumes. As for gastronomy, try the clams, whelks, shrimp, cockles, prawns, and lobsters.
